Understanding Mattress Foam Types and Qualities, Part 2

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some of the basics on foam within the world of mattresses. Originally intended only as a mattress topper to soften up the experience, mattress foam has developed into a primary mattress material in many cases, allowing for strong support and incredible sleep comfort for many mattress buyers.

At 2 Brothers Mattress, we’re happy to offer a wide variety of foam mattress options, from numerous memory foam selections to several other alternatives. While memory foam is the most well-known of the mattress foam types today, it’s far from the only one – today’s part two of our series will go over the different options available within the mattress foam designation, plus some tips on determining whether a foam mattress is the ideal choice for you based on your sleeping needs, budget and other factors.

Mattress Foam Options

There are a few different specific types of mattress foam to consider if you’re going this route. Which you choose will depend on your sleeping style, for one, but also your budget, temperature preferences and several other variables. The styles generally available are as follows:

  • Memory foam: As we noted, this is the most well-known of the foam mattress options. Known in industry as viscoelastic foam, this is a highly compressed type of foam that’s also designed to soften up after you remove the pressure of your body. This means it will “hug” your body and contour to you as you sleep, providing one of the most comfortable experiences available.
  • Polyurethane foam: Also called polyfoam, this option is another of the most common foams found in beds. It’s similar to memory foam in the way it’s compressed, but doesn’t soften up to quite the same degree after pressure is removed. This is the least expensive type of foam to manufacture, making it the most affordable and, therefore, very popular.
  • Gel-infused foam: This is a foam type that’s infused with another material, usually a liquid or gel pad, to keep your sleep temperature down. Those who prioritize a cool sleeping environment often go for this option.
  • Latex foam: For those looking for a foam mattress that’s environmentally friendly, the latex foam mattress is a versatile, highly durable option that also mimics many of the qualities of memory foam.

Is Mattress Foam the Right Choice?

Foam is just one of several great materials on the mattress market today, and it’s important to know there’s really no “wrong” choice here. Foam mattresses are fantastic for sleeper comfort and removing painful pressure points, plus for isolating motion – this is ideal for many couples who don’t want to wake each other up during the night. At the same time, there are other great materials depending on your needs, from innerspring options to hybrids and several other choices that might be optimal for your budget range and sleep desires. Our pros will be happy to guide you in the right direction here.
