02 Jul Mattress Firmness: Understanding General Ranges
Comfort is a vital factor for virtually anyone considering a new mattress, but it’s important to note that comfort is a broad, varied category. It includes the way the mattress feels when you first lie on it, of course, but it also refers to long-term factors like the support the mattress provides you – and within this latter area, one particular variable that should not be ignored is the firmness of the mattress being selected.
At 2 Brothers Mattress, we’re proud to offer a wide range of mattress firmness and comfort levels, from soft mattresses up through firm options and everything in between. For those buying their first mattress, or their first in a long time, however, how do you choose the ideal firmness for your needs? This two-part blog series will offer a basic primer – we’ll start here in part one by going over the various ranges of mattress firmness, then continue in part two by discussing the additional factors that play a role in which range you choose.
Soft
Also known as “plus” mattresses in some circles, soft mattresses are generally flexible, with the ability to conform easily to the shape of your body while you sleep on it. These mattresses are between a 1 and 2 on the mattress firmness scale, which ranges from 1-10. Those who sleep on soft mattresses will enjoy the sensation of “sinking” into the mattress, though just by a small amount – it won’t be tough to get up or anything like that.
Generally, soft mattresses are preferred by those who sleep lightly, and/or who sleep with a partner. This is because soft mattresses absorb motion, helping limit the impact you feel if your partner is tossing and turning. However, they don’t provide as much back and joint support as other options.
Medium-Soft
Moving up the scale to mattresses with a firmness number of 3 or 4, medium-soft mattresses are a bit firmer, but still pretty soft. They are best for those who want pressure-point relief from a soft layer, but need more core support than a soft mattress can offer.
Medium-Firm
Medium-firm mattresses are some of the most popular out there, ranging from 5-7 on the firmness scale. These options will contour to your body in minor ways, similar to softer options, but will also provide high-quality support. In addition, these mattresses are typically made of more durable materials that will last longer.
Firm
The most rigid options available, ranging 8-10 on the firmness scale, are firm mattresses, which are also the most supportive. These aren’t as flexible and won’t really conform to the body, but will offer fantastic support to the back and other parts of the body. Athletes and those who regularly experience back or joint pain are those who tend to favor firm mattresses.
