06 Dec Mattress Accessory and Moving Checklist for New College Students, Part 1
If you’re a graduating high school senior getting ready to head out for freshman year of college, or even if you’re a parent of such a student, this is an exciting time. There are so many things to think about, but ensure you take the proper time to consider one of the most basic life areas before you leave: Sleep.
At 2 Brothers Mattress, we’re proud to offer not only a variety of great mattress options for a wide variety of needs, but also numerous mattress accessories ranging from mattress protectors to pillows, bed frames and many others. These accessories are often must-haves for departing college students heading to a dormitory – spaces that usually have mattresses already present, but generally require students to bring their own bedding and related items. In this two-part blog, we’ll first go over a few specific accessories that you must keep in mind before leaving for college, plus dig into a specific packing list for both bedding and other areas before you head out.
Pillows
While most dorms have their own mattresses, as we noted, you’re generally expected to bring your own pillow with you – and even in situations where pillows are provided, many prefer to bring their own for comfort reasons. Pillows are a vital part of sleep quality, offering the kind of head and neck support you simply won’t be getting from a stock dorm mattress.
Some figure they’ll just work out their pillow situation later, but we recommend against this. The college dorm life quickly becomes a whirlwind, and we’ve heard horror stories about students who slept on couch pillows for months because they simply never got around to getting a real one. This can have a real impact on not only your sleep and alertness during class and daily life, but also on your long-term neck and spine health.
Mattress Protector
In many cases, the mattresses provided by dorms have been, shall we say, well-used over the years. They may have experienced some significant spills and other issues during their lifetimes.
For this reason, it’s vital to invest in a mattress protector as you head off to school. Keeping a barrier between yourself and any possible contaminants will keep you healthier – and the protector will also serve a nice preventive purpose for if you happen to have a few beverages in your dorm room from time to time.
Sheets
Finally, be sure you don’t overlook sheets when it comes to dorm packing. Cozy sheets can make or break the sleeping experience – consider microfiber or bamboo options for the absolute best comfort around.
