This means offering our expertise in several related mattress areas, and one of the most common here is general cleaning. In particular, especially for homes with younger children or pets present, one of the most common stain forms mattress owners worry about? Urine stains. Let’s go over some quick tips for getting rid of urine stains and returning a mattress to like-new state without a major hassle.

Warranty Concerns

For starters, just a quick caution: Before you begin cleaning your mattress using any specific products or methods, just check the factory warranty to be sure nothing you’re about to do will not void it. This is rarely the case, and most warranties allow for such simple cleaning, but it’s always worth checking just in case.

Immediate Action

If you’ve determined that you aren’t voiding a warranty, the first priority when it comes to cleaning urine stains off a mattress is timeliness. You won’t always be able to catch a urine stain the moment it’s made, of course, but as soon as you do discover it, you have to take immediate action.

Grab a sponge or paper towel and soak it, then quickly blot the stain to try and soak some of it up right away. If you have a wet-dry vacuum in the home, use it to soak up even more. As additional temporary care, you may sprinkle some baking soda on the area (we’ll use this material again later, so keep it handy).

Laundry Detergent Solution

When it comes to both deep urine stains and the general odor associated with even minor ones, laundry detergent is a great asset. It’s perfect for use after you’ve already soaked the mattress, or for mattresses where the stain was so old that soaking wouldn’t matter.

Simply mix two teaspoons of your detergent up with a cup of warm water. Pour or spray this solution onto the stain area, then blot it similarly to how you did originally. From here, do your best to dry this area of the mattress.

Baking Soda

Once the area is dry again, you should re-apply a sprinkle of baking soda over the entire mattress – not just the urine stain area. This will help prevent any odors from spreading around. After roughly 24 hours, during which you may need to find somewhere else to sleep for the night, bring the vacuum back out and remove the baking soda.
