How to Tell When it’s Time to Buy New Mattress

Even the highest-quality mattress will wear out in time. You can prolong the life of your mattress by flipping it often.  Often would be approximately four times a year, but soon comes the day when it’s time to say goodbye.  Your body should tell you when it is time for a new one, but are you paying attention?  Are you regularly waking up feeling stiff and sore or if you aren’t sleeping as well as you did a year ago, it may be time to replace the mattress you are sleeping on. You should at least twice a year, check for visible signs of wear and tear and ask yourself if you’re sleeping better or worse than you did a year ago. This regular sleep check-up will help ensure your mattress is still doing its job.

So, how do you know when it’s time to ditch the old mattress and invest in a new one?  How can you tell when a mattress is used up? Here are some questions you might want to ask yourself:

Consider The  Age

Have you used the bed nightly, for eight to 10 years? Consider when you got your mattress. Some mattresses can last for 10 years, but five to seven years is the average lifespan for an adult’s mattress.

Look at it

Look at the shape of your mattress. Does the surface of your mattress look uneven?  Are there sagging spots where you lie, or around the edges of the mattress?  Are some spots more comfortable than others?  If it sags or has lumps, or if it has developed a valley in the area where you sleep, it’s time for a new one.  Also if you sleep with someone else, look for sagging across the middle third of the mattress or along the sides that makes you roll toward your partner.

Listen to it

Listen to the sounds your mattress makes when you lay on it.  Does the bed wobble or sway?  If it’s loud and creaky when you roll around, it’s getting worn out.

Consider How You Sleep

Consider how well you sleep at night. If you’re constantly tossing and turning, are unable to find a comfortable position on your mattress, or if you feel coils pressing into your body, you should think about replacing it. If you sleep with a partner, do you both roll toward the middle of the bed?

How do You Feel When You Sleep

How do you usually feel when you wake up in the morning?  Do you wake up sore or stiff, or with back pain? If you wake up tired or achy, sore or stiff, your mattress is probably to blame.

Sleep Somewhere Else

Take a short vacation from your bed. If a couple of nights spent on a different mattress makes a difference in how good you feel in the morning, get a new mattress and get back to peaceful sleep.
