Keeping Your Mattress Clean & Tidy

Keeping Your Mattress Clean & Tidy

Your bed is a place where you spend quite a bit of your life, and it’s not something that you replace very often—in fact, the average person only has to get a new bed about every 5 to 10 years. Since you spend so much time there, and you want it to be quality time in a deep, restful sleep, keeping the mattress clean and free of dirt, dust mites, and other allergens should be a top priority. Here are some tips to keep that mattress just as clean as the day you brought it home from 2 Brothers Mattress.

Preventing Accidents
The best way to keep your mattress clean after taking it home from a Utah mattress store is to prevent it from getting too dirty in the first place, but if you have children or pets, or you like to eat or drink in bed, there are times when a spill is simply unavoidable. To prevent those spills from penetrating the fabric of your mattress, the best thing you can do is invest in a mattress cover. If you have children who are potty training, talk to 2 Brothers Mattress about options to purchase accessories like water resistant and stain resistant covers during those years.

Keep it Clean & Fresh
If you don’t regularly clean the mattress that you purchased at 2 Brothers Mattress, you will find that over time it becomes dusty, dirty, and a hospitable place for dust mites to take up residence. These microscopic arachnids tend to live in large colonies in areas of your home where there is a lot of dust. Since they enjoy eating flakes of human skin, and like warm, moist environments, a bed is a great place to stay. Unfortunately their excrement can also cause all kinds of allergies, asthma, breathing, and wheezing problems.

In addition to using a mattress cover to prevent too much dust from getting on the mattress, you can also get out a vacuum and clean the cracks and crevices in your mattress. Over time dust can collect in small areas in the corners, and vacuuming it will remove it and any dust mites that call it home.

Passing the Smell Test
Since you’re sleeping in the bed every night, you want it to be fresh and clean, and you want it to smell that way too. There are two ways you can freshen up the mattress:

  • Use small packets of baking soda to absorb some of the smells that can collect in your mattress—especially if you tend to sleep hot and sweat during the night. You can either purchase packets to place in between the mattress and the box spring, or you can sprinkle some on top of the mattress when you vacuum, leave it for 2-3 hours, then vacuum it up.
  • Air out your mattress every few months to prevent any buildup of moisture (and some of the less desirable things that come with it, such as mold or mildew). An easy way to do this is to leave the mattress uncovered for the day when you wash the sheets and blankets.

Taking care of your mattress from 2 Brothers Mattress not only helps you have a fresh, clean place to sleep each night, it also ensures that you get the most out of the mattress you buy.
