Mattress Cleaning Importance: Allergies, Dust, Bed Bugs

When many people perform various forms of house cleaning, whether we’re talking spring cleaning or any other type, there’s one particular area that sometimes gets glossed over: The mattress. Just because the mattress is covered by sheets and blankets doesn’t mean it stays clean all the time — and cleaning yours regularly is vital for a few reasons.

At 2 Brothers Mattress, we offer a huge range of mattresses and mattress types, from memory foam to innerspring, hybrid and many others. We also provide clients with basic tips and expertise on the care of their mattresses, and cleaning is definitely a part of this. What are some of the most important reasons to regularly clean your mattress? We’ll go over several in this two-part blog series.

Limiting Allergies or Asthma

Those who deal with respiratory conditions like allergies, asthma and others can often find their symptoms aggravated by the presence of dust mites. Dust mites are tiny creatures that thrive in dirty environments, and they’re known to cause all sorts of respiratory problems in humans. They especially like to live in mattresses, as we humans provide them with an endless food supply (dead skin cells) and a comfortable place to reside.

These aren’t even the only potential allergens or other irritants that can be found in your mattress. If you have pets, their dander could also be present, and if you or anyone else in the household smokes cigarettes, the residue from this habit can also end up in the mattress. All of these things can lead to respiratory problems, so it’s important to keep your mattress as clean as possible to limit your exposure.

Preventing Dust

Another major reason to keep your mattress clean is to prevent the build-up of dust. Over time, dust will accumulate in any home — it’s just a fact of life. However, you can limit the amount of dust in your home and therefore improve the air quality by regularly cleaning all surfaces, including your mattress.

This is especially important if you have allergies or respiratory problems, as we already discussed. However, even if you don’t have any health concerns, it’s still important to keep the dust down. After all, no one likes breathing in dust particles, and too much dust can actually lead to physical discomfort and irritation.

Bed Bugs and Other Pest Prevention

Dust mites aren’t the only creatures that like to take up residence in mattresses. Bed bugs are also a very real threat, and these pests can cause a lot of problems if they infest your mattress. Not only are bed bugs extremely difficult to get rid of once they’ve taken hold, but they can also cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and a whole host of other issues.

Cleaning your mattress on a regular basis is one of the best ways to prevent bed bugs from taking up residence. By vacuuming it regularly and keeping it free of dust and other debris, you’ll make it much less inviting for these pests.
