20 Oct Choosing Proper Bed Height
When it comes to a good night’s sleep and ease waking up in the morning, one underrated factor is the height of your bed. Most of us don’t think much about this when we set up a new bedroom or buy a new mattress, but it can have a real impact on everything from basic comfort to sleep quality.
At 2 Brothers Mattress, we can help you identify and choose the proper bed height for you when you shop our selection of quality mattresses. Most people have a personal preference here, or can find theirs fairly quickly if they haven’t thought about it before. Here are some simple basics on bed height and finding your sweet spot.
Bed Height Basics and Test
In general, the height of your bed should relate to how tall you are as a person. Someone who is 6-foot-8 will naturally operate very differently here from someone who is under five feet tall.
Here’s a simple test for determining if you’re in the right range:
-
Sit on the edge of your bed with your feet hanging off – note the position of your knees compared to your hips.
-
If your knees fall well below your hips, the bed might be too low. If your feet dangle over the edge and don’t touch the floor, on the other hand, you know the bed is very likely too high.
-
Next, attempt to rest your feet flat on the floor with your knees and hips at the same horizontal level. Can you easily sit down and stand up from this position? If so, you’re in good shape. If not, you might consider an adjustment.
Finding the Right Height
You don’t even need an actual mattress to test your ideal bed height – you can do it with a few basic household items if you’re considering a whole new mattress. Here are a couple tactics:
-
Find a basic dining chair and sit down in it. When you attempt to stand up, can you do so without pushing off on the arms of the chair or your knees? This is the height where lower-standing mattresses generally are positioned, so if you’re uncomfortable here, chances are you will be attempting to stand and sit on a bed of a similar size.
-
If you have one, sit on a 24- or 30-inch bar stool and see if you enjoy that height instead. Some people will feel like they have to climb up here, but others may find it’s easy to sit down and stand up. This is a good way to simulate sitting and standing off a soft mattress at a taller height – these won’t offer options to push yourself off like chair arms.
