25 Jan Box Spring Vs. Bed Slats: Pros and Cons of Each
In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over the basics on both box springs and bed slats. These are the two primary forms of bed support used for mattresses today, and each may come with its own set of pros and cons depending on your needs.
At 2 Brothers Mattress, we’re proud to offer a wide range of not only mattresses, but also adjustable bed frames and other products. In today’s part two of our series, we’ll go over the pros and cons of both box springs and bed slats to help you make your decision on which is best for you.
Pros and Cons of Box Springs
Box springs are the more popular of these two options, and come with several potential benefits — but also a few potential downsides. Let’s go with the benefits first:
- Low chance of sagging: While this is a risk with most mattress setups, box springs give you the lowest chance of sagging due to their ability to hold your whole weight.
- Height: Compared to slats, box springs offer more height to your mattress, which is important if you have a platform bed or need to accommodate low-lying furniture in your bedroom.
- Variety of sizes: Box springs are available in queen, king and California King options, so it’s usually easy to find one that fits your setup perfectly.
- Added bounce: For those with innerspring mattresses, they often flip and flop around on slats, but this is less likely with box springs.
At the same time, there are a few reasons some might opt against box springs:
- Weight: Box springs are heavy and bulky, which can make them tough to move and tough to fit in small places, like those with storage underneath.
- Price: Compared to slats, these tend to be more expensive as well (though this may vary depending on the brand and options you choose).
- Limited storage: While slats offer you the ability to choose whether to use storage underneath your bed, box springs don’t allow for this choice — you’re stuck with the storage if your box spring has it, and there is no other option.
Pros and Cons of Bed Slats
For many sleepers, bed slats may be the preferred option over box springs. Here are some of the reasons why:
- Affordability: Like box springs, you’ll find bed slats in numerous sizes — but they tend to be less expensive than box springs.
- Ease of assembly: They are generally easier to put together than a box spring setup.
- Weight: Like with box springs, their weight is evenly distributed across the floor, whereas something like a platform bed may make this difficult with box springs.
- Storage: Slats leave much more space underneath your bed for storage.
However, there are some potential drawbacks to slats:
- Potential sagging: For most sleepers, this isn’t an issue — but with these, you may notice sagging with time.
- Sturdiness: Some bed slats are flimsy and don’t support your mattress very well. Look for sturdy ones if you choose this option.
- Lower height: Slats tend to be shorter than box springs, so those with platform beds may want to look for extra height options with slat support.
